Why Black Friar Inn?

Why stay at the Black Friar Inn? In a word, location. We're in beautiful Bar Harbor, Maine, on the east side of Mount Desert Island. And we're just minutes from the attractions that make the Bar Harbor area such an amazing place. Want to stroll along Bar Harbor Shore Path? We're a short walk from it. Want to head over to Bar Island, via the Land Bridge? The bridgeless then a half-mile from our front door. And, don't forget that Bar Harbor is the gateway to Acadia National Park. The entrance to this world-famous forest is just three minutes from Black Friar Inn.

At the Black Friar Inn, you can avoid the crowds sometimes associated with our area. We're tucked away on a quiet side street near the center of town. Our iconic Bar Harbor bed and breakfast has ornate architectural woodwork, salvaged from old area mansions (Considered "cottages" by the wealthy summer residents of the 1800s!), creating a quaint Old European charm to the inn. We offer six spacious rooms, with unique features, such as a spiral staircase to a turret tower, stained glass windows, and a trolley-car ceiling.

Wondering where to eat in Bar Harbor? When you stay at the Black Friar Inn, you never have to worry about making reservations in town. Everything you need is right here. Each morning, you can dine in our relaxing restaurant, and order from an extensive breakfast menu. Later in the day, you can stop by the Friar's Pub, a casual place to relax and enjoy a pint and a bite, meet some locals, and pick up information about happenings around the Mount Desert Island area. Our full-service dining is highly rated and has fresh-off-the-boat seafood and locally sourced ingredients when available. There's also a roof deck to relax on as the sun goes down and the stars come out!

The Black Friar Inn is inspired by the Black Friars of the past. These friars would frequent inns and taverns, looking for a way to connect with others. Our inn values the traditions and feelings of the past, so we try to incorporate these into our inn.

In close proximity to shops and restaurants in town though and with easy access in and out of town to sites in Acadia National Park. Steven and the whole staff really go out of their way to welcome and take care of their guests!
